Interface Detection

ITS recently won an Inspired Innovation Award from the Technology Strategy Board which addressed the application of process tomography to interface detection.  This picked up on earlier work with University of Manchester to apply parametric reconstruction methods to what is (apparently) a simple measurement – the height of an interface along the length of a probe.

Parametric reconstruction applies a process model as the basis of reconstructing a tomographic image, rather than traditional inverse problem solving techniques.

The initial work was encouraging, however when the model was applied to real (rather than synthetic data) its performance deteriorated significantly, failing to resolve interfaces in the time and accuracy required.  Further work was carried out by ITS through improvements in sensor design and application of additional measurements.  These changes have resulted in dramatically improved resolution of interfaces and ITS look forward to applying thetechnique with customers later this year.
