The p2000 and m3000 have been used in a wide range of processes and applications.
Researchers have tended to divide into two groups:

Tomographic research
ITS recommends the use of the m3000 which allows tomography researchers to test excitation protocols and combine different modalities - in particular capacitance and resistance to explore issues such as data fusion.

Applications research
The p2000 has been used in a wide range of systems to investigate their hydrodynamics.
In the area of multi-phase flow, there is considerable interest in cross-correlation techniques and also in using the M3000 so that a wide range of component concentrations (such as varying quantities of air / water / oil) can be measured on a single instrument.
Researchers at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada are imaging liquid flows in digesters using ITS technology. They have performed tomographic analysis of various test flows through a model digester to determine the accuracy and reproducibility of the technique. Tests have examined a wide range of flow scenarios in the vessel including zone creation in both upflow and downflow conditions.
