ITS travelled to Phoenix, Arizona for the annual Waste Management Symposia 2011 to further establish process tomography in the nuclear industry. The robust and scalable ITS technologies are an excellent match for the challenging application areas providing full volumetric information sometime impossible to gather with current techniques due to extreme process conditions.

Process tomography has been successfully implemented in the Hanford Laboratories to characterise the effectiveness in Pulse Jet Mixers (PJMs). Work from this project was presented by Paul Townson of Energy Solutions "Instrumentation for real time monitoring of the 3-dimensional particulate distribution in the Hanford double shell tank small scale mixing demonstration platform" during session 19, “Storage and Retrieval of High Level Waste (HLW)”. This work generated high interest in the technology and ITS is now looking at solving a number of applications within the industry – liquid/liquid interface detection, solids height in storage tanks, efficiency of mixing processes, flow characterisation in slurry pipes, and even validation of the established radiation-based technologies.
